Weed Abatement
Program Overview

Help keep La Mesa fire safe by clearing weeds and combustibles from your property! Every year homes are lost throughout Southern California when wildfire spreads from undeveloped land into developed areas. To prevent this spread of fire, the City (under State Law) adopts a weed abatement program to require property owners to clear weeds from their property.

Notices & City Action

The program begins in March when a member of the Fire Department inspects all lots within the City for wild vegetation. By Council action, notices are mailed in April to property owners allowing them 30 days to clear their properties of weeds. In June the lots are re-inspected. A second notice is sent via certified mail, allowing five additional days to those property owners who have not yet cleared the weeds from their properties. If the weeds have not been cleared from the properties after the five days, a contractor is hired and the properties are cleared.

The cost for the clearing is then billed to the property owner as a special assessment tax. The cost billed will include the actual cost of removal plus a 45% administrative fee.

Over the past few years the City has only had to clear an average of two lots per year. Thank you for helping to keep La Mesa fire safe.
